Give me a candle of the Spirit, O God, as I go down into the
deeps of my being. Show me the hidden things, the creatures

and my name. Give me freedom to grow, so that I may become
that self, the seed of which you planted in me at my making.
Out of the deeps I cry to you, O God.

A very Anglican Prayer
I begin this day, dear Lord,
As I plug in and switch on my kettle,
remind me that you are the source of all energy,
all life, all connectedness.
Let me make contact with my little universe.

As the tea brews, may I rest and reflect on you.
As I drink may your spirit refresh me.
Bless all those who share the pot with me.

Lord, why did you tell me to love (excerpt)

Lord, why did you tell me to love all men, my brothers?
I have tried, but I come back to you, frightened ...
Lord, I was so peaceful at home, I was so comfortably settled.
it was well furnished, and I felt cozy.
I was alone, I was at peace,
Sheltered from the wind, the raiii, the mud.
I would have stayed unsullied in my ivory tower.
But, Lord, you have discovered a breach iii my defences,
You have forced me to open my door,
Like a squall of rain in the face, the cry of men has awakened me;
Like a gale of wind a friendship has shaken me,
As a ray of light slips in unnoticed, your grace has stirred me
... and, rashly enough, I left my door ajar. Now, Lord, I am lost!
Outside men were lying in wait for me.
I did not know they were so near; in this house, in this street, in this office; my neighbour, my colleague, my friend.
As soon as I started to open the door I saw them, with outstretched hands, burning eyes, longing hearts, like beggars on church steps.

The first ones came in, Lord. There was after all some space in my heart.
I welcomed them. I would have cared for them and fondled them, my very own little lambs, my little flock.
You would have been pleased, Lord, I would have served and honoured you in a proper, respectable way.
Till then, it was sensible ...
But the next ones, Lord, the other men, I had not seen them; they were hidden behind the first ones.
There were more of them, they were wretched; they overpowered me without warning.
We had to crowd in, I had to find room for them.
Now they have come from all over, in successive waves, pushing one another, jostling one another.

They have come from all over town, from all parts of the country, of the world; numberless, inexhaustible.
They don't come alone any longer but in groups, bound one to another.
They come bending under heavy loads; loads of injustice, of resentment and hate, of suffering and sin . . .
They drag the world behind them, with everything rusted, twisted, or badly adjusted.

Lord, they hurt me! They are in the way, they are everywhere.
They are too hungry, they are consuming me!
I can't do anything any more; as they come in, they push the
door, and the door opens wider ...
Lord! my door is wide open!
I can't stand it any more! It's too much! It's no kind of a life!
What about my job?
my family?
my peace?
my liberty?
and me?
Lord, I have lost everything, I don't belong to myself any longer;
There's no more room for me at home.

Don't worry, God says, you have gained all.
While men came in to you,
I, your Father,
I, your God,
Slipped in among them.

Fourth Sunday after Pentecost 8 June 2008

Divine Word, eternal echo of Life and Love,
We are called like Abram into the unknown
And in faith we follow the Divine voice
trusting in the promise to all, the eternal Divine blessing
In Christ, the Word of life
The same call is voiced, as a call to follow
And our faith is affirmed by the abiding of your Love with us.
Together we will walk through dying ways into your eternal promise ...
Amen

++++++++++++++++++++++++

Pray

that we may choose new paths to walk and trust our Faith as we seek life in unknown places....Pray that we will find paths that will take us closer to each other and closer to God. Give thanks for all who walk with us and hold us and for the gift of love that enables us to hold others. Give thanks for the many differences that enable us to honour one another, and for the blessings and gifts that others freely share with us. Pray that we may bear the fruits of our baptism as we too know ourselves a beloved children of the Divine. Strengthen us that we might look beyond our own mortality and seek a life that is eternally blessed. Give thanks for those who are our elders and for the stories that they pass on. . For this community and for all that we celebrate together. Give thanks for children and for the noise they make. Pray for our continued participation in God’s creative purpose. Give thanks for those who create peace and who are not afraid...For refugees and asylum seekers and all who offer them hospitality. Pray for the Church – that together we may know the light, and be a light for others.

Amazing Grace, Awaken us to the promise of life
At night, the distant roar and pounding of the ocean calls us to roam, and soar in the vast amphitheatre of your sea, and shore and sky.
In daylight, you dazzle us: in every sight, sound, and object of touch ; with the solid reality of the world ; and with the astonishing fact that we exist at all.
Awaken awe in our souls, so we may discover and experience life to the full.

Amazing Grace, Awaken us to the promise of the world
We pray for communities around the world that are in crisis – for those who have lost their children, their companions, their homes ; for all those who must start again in unpromising circumstances.
We pray that our country may count its blessings and achieve a largeness of heart and vision, looking beyond petrol prices to a compassionate and sustainable future.
Awaken our hope, so we may see what is possible, and all that we can remedy and achieve.

Amazing Grace, Awaken us to the promise of the church
We pray that your church may be true to the spirit of Abraham who set out on a late-life and epic journey, believing God’s promise ; we pray that your church may be true to the spirit of Jesus, who lived as an itinerant, outdoor preacher, transcending laws and expectations.
Awaken our faith, so we may trust in our conscience and the promptings of our spirit, so the church may pull up its tent pegs and lead the way to the promised land.

Amazing Grace, Awaken us to our own promise
We have laboured under the weight of self absorption, and our physical frailties ; we have wasted time and talents in sleepiness ; we have allowed our youthful spirit to die. Sit down with us, take our hand, heal us ; and we shall sit down with others, take their hand, and heal their damaged bodies, hearts, and minds.
In an uncrowded and quiet room of our souls we seek liberation and new life for ourselves, and for those who need our love and support.
Awaken joy in our hearts, so we may reform, heal, and create.
Amazing Grace, in awe, in hope, in faith, in joy, Awaken us to the promise of life Amen

Theo's Intercessions May 18, 2008

Loving God, Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer
We pause to join our hearts, our minds and our will to your concerns for the world.

This glorious Creation in which you have placed us – you declared it good and beautiful and suited to all the purposes of your love. Kindle in us such love for the Earth that we will always be mindful of our rightful place as custodians, as carers, and as lovers of what you have made.

We rejoice in the beauty of the gardens which surround us, and stop in awe at the sunsets which emblazon the sky. We marvel at the produce of the ground and of the seas and pause in thanks for your bounty.

Loving God, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pause also to ponder how the bounty which is ours seems one-sided. Too often our comfort is shaken by the knowledge that too many people have none of it. The awful immediacy of the emergency in Burma, of the disaster in China have gripped us this week. But what of next week, and the week after? Will we remember these people on our screens? Will we recall that many places are not gripped by instant disaster, but continue on wracked by famine, death and disease? Darfur. Ethiopia. Palestine. Somalia.

Create in us a clean heart, O God, and a right spirit within us that we might live simply so that others may simply live.

Loving God, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray also for the invisible in our own streets. Those who are seemingly in our faces – the ones we walk around to avoid – but who are unknown to us and invisible as people. Those whose names are only known to the other invisible ones, to the police and to the hospitals and hostels.

Where your Son is, Lord, may we find ourselves.

Loving God, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for your Church, particularly for the leadership which Peter gives here, and for the care and commitment which Archbishop Roger provides to the Diocese. We pray for Kay Goldsworthy as she takes on the duties of bishop this week. May her work be a unifier among all who proclaim the Good News.

Loving God, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for the people around us this morning. Each person, with joys and sorrows, with needs and wants. Whether comfortable or not, at ease or nervous, this is our place in this moment. This is the place where we seek your love, your grace, your spirit. This is the place of community and communion. A place of friendships made and hopes for more.

As you see in the heart of each one of us, we ask only for a heart open to your gaze.

Loving God, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Amen.

Day of Pentecost 11 May 2008

Flame-dancing Spirit
Come sweep us off our feet
And Dance us through our days.
Surprise us with your rhythms;
dare us to try new steps,
explore new patterns
and new partnerships.
Release us from old routines
to swing in abandoned joy
and fearful adventure.
And in the intervals,
rest us in your still centre.
Amen

Create a Global Warming
And receive the attention
Of all who seek Life... Amen

Collect
Divine Love, flame of Life,
We are birthed with Divine gifts
We are alive in the divine breath
We rejoice in the Divine presence
In Christ, the Divine Spirit is revealed
As a flame of Humanity and a fire of divinity
We are drawn into this flame-dancing Spirit as
We seek to be consumed in the divine fire of eternal life....
Amen

++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Pray with thanksgiving for the gift and blessing that is our very being. Give thanks for all that is birthed/created in love, and all who bear witness to the Word. Give thanks for each other, for all that we have to share and for opportunities to stand in one place. Pray for this community (past, present and future) and the communities of which we are a part. Give thanks for every opportunity we have to reveal the Divine gifts that are the very source of our life…

Pray for our young members - and give thanks for all who give them a sense of community and the confidence to look forward with faith and hope. Give thanks for the work and example of our “Elders”, those from whom we inherit much. Pray for families in crisis, that God’s love will arise and give life - And for refugees who experience the struggle and desire for new life. Pray for all whose peace is disturbed by the noise of war. For those finding life a struggle and hope diminishing, that we may hear their cry. Give thanks for all that you are and all that you have and for opportunities to give to others. Give thanks for the Divine fullness that we glimpse as we share together in worship

Amazing Fire, In blood and fire and smoky mist you encircle the earth
In the heat of your flame all creatures, from blue whales to sugar ants, are bought to life.
In the heat of your flame all creatures, great and small, are returned to dust and ashes.

In the very coursing of their blood, all creatures sing of you ; but of all creatures, we alone have the gift of language.

May we to throw the incense of our consciousness on life’s holy fire - speaking your wisdom, voicing our dreams and prophecies, honouring all other creatures, and filling the earth with the smoky mist of our praise.

Amazing Fire, Consume the barriers between people and nations
We pray for leaders and diplomats facing the barricades of military regimes, insensitivity to human rights, and environmental short sightedness ; We think of all those who risk their own safety to overcome such barriers - bringing medical care and the necessities of life to people in crisis ; at this time in particular, we pray that aid will get through to the cyclone victims in Burma.
Amazing Fire, Awaken our spiritual gifts for the common good of the church, and our community
We give thanks for all the gifts of the Spirit that are found amongst us : for those who heal and work miracles ; those who prophecy ; those who counsel and guide ; those who speak in mysterious and provoking ways ; and those who seek to unfold mysteries and enrich our understanding.
We pray for a discerning church ; that recognises true gifts and uncovers false prophets ; that seeks the common good for all humanity.
Amazing Fire, Inspire us with gifts of healing and compassion
We welcome into our burning hearts those who are ill, or troubled, or confused ; we stand together around the bonfires of our troubles ; we settle in together around mesmerising warmth giving hearths.
Amazing Fire, Kindle our life force so we may live freely and joyously
Ignite the purifying blaze of forgiveness in our deepest selves ; release, unknot, lighten, shake-off, all that angers, distorts, preoccupies, and constricts us, so we may offer peace to each other, and receive the peace that liberates, astonishes, and enflames.
Amazing Fire, Burn within our hearts Amen

Fifth Sunday of Lent 9 March 2008

May the God who dances in creation,
who embraces us with human love,
who shakes our lives like thunder,
bless us and drive us out with power
to fill the world with justice.
  And the blessing of God,
  the eternal goodwill of God,
  the shalom of God,
the wildness and warmth of God
be among us and between us now and always,
  Amen

Second Sunday in Lent 17 February 2008

The caim is a type of Celtic prayer:
‘In the time of low tide or danger, the Hebridean Celts drew round themselves and their loved ones the caim. Using the index finger of their right hand they would point and turn a full circle sun-wise... This was no magic, [or] attempt to manipulate God, but a reminder by action that we are always surrounded by God, who is our encompasser, our encircler. It is our wavering that has put us out of tune. This is a tuning in to the fact that, 'in Him we live and move and have our being'; we are enfolded in Him. It is not about making something happen, it is an attempt to make us aware of reality.’ Here is a caim prayer:

The Sacred Three
My fortress be
Encircling me
Come and be around
My hearth my home.

First Sunday in Lent 10 February 2008

My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope that I have that desire in all that I am doing. Thomas Merton

Transfiguration Sunday 3 February 2008

Keri Wehlander, a gifted liturgist and editor, has written this prayer as part of the Lent worship. It perfectly expresses the heart space that is Lent.

Beyond the steady noise,
lead us to a dry, desert place –
a place for listening.

Beyond the jostle of chaos,
lead us to a place of open horizons –
a place for clarity.

Beyond our rigid falsehoods,
lead us to a place of ancient light –
a place for transformation.

Beyond the unyielding demands,
lead us to a place of dancing winds –
a place for freedom.

Beyond the endless distractions,
Lead us to a place of fiery mystery –
A place for encountering you alone.

Collect
God of Divine mystery in All Life….
We, with all people, are heirs of your glory…
following in the Light revealed by Moses, by Elijah
and transfigured into reality through Christ……
In Christ, is revealed the fullness of Divine Love
and each other we glimpse the same….
Walking together we seek to walk in your Divine Light.
Amen

++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Pray that in the ebb and flow of community we may learn to swim with others and venture out into deeper waters…. Give thanks for each other as we seek to find ‘Christ with us’ and to climb our own mountains….. Pray that we may honour our heritage, the conversation that has gone before, and that we find our words to create a dialogue for tomorrow. Give thanks for those who hear the words of truth, and those who guide others into the way of Peace. Give thanks for all who nurture and make real in acts of love the call of our community.

Pray that we may know ourselves as the Word seeking to be made fully alive. Give thanks for all that we share in common with all people and with all faiths Give thanks for those who bring light into our lives and for the opportunities we have to bring light into the lives of others. Give thanks for our children and for all who will continue the journey that we are on - and build on the foundations we lay.

Pray for all who are staring school and all returning to school, that they may have fun in discovering their wisdom….Pray that we might feed others and nurture within ourselves a spirit of compassion. Pray for all refugees and for hospitality in the hearts of all. Give thanks for the Divine fullness that we glimpse as we share together in worship… And pray that we may say sorry, whenever the need arises.

who is alive with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God now and for ever.

“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you.”
Forgive us for listening to - and believing - voices that call us worthless
and unlovable.
“I have called you by name, you are mine.”
Forgive us when we feel imprisoned by our fears - fear of pain,
of loneliness, of death.
“When you pass through trying times which threaten to engulf you, I will be with you.”
Forgive our negative feelings about ourselves and other people.
“You are precious in my sight, and honoured, and I love you.”
Loving and merciful God, forgive us when we allow our fears and our
worries to stifle your voice of love. Help us to hear your words of love
reverberate in every corner of our being so that we know that we too are
your beloved, on whom your favour rests. Amen

Magnificat – The Song of Mary

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord:
and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,
Who has looked with favour on his lowly servant:
from now on all generations will call me blessed;
The Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
God has mercy on those who fear him:
from generation to generation.
The Lord has shown strength with his arm;
and scattered the proud in their conceit,
Casting down the mighty from their thrones:
and lifting up the lowly.
God has filled the hungry with good things:
and sent the rich away empty.
He has come to the aid of his servant Israel,
to remember the promise of his mercy,
The promise made to our forebears:
to Abraham and his Children for ever.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

May the blessing of light be upon you,
light without and light within.
May the blessed sunlight shine upon you
and warm your heart
till it glows like a great fire

like a candle set in the window of a house,
bidding the wanderer to come in
out of the storm
