Praying for Peace
There is a very real danger in “Praying for Peace” especially in these times when the “Coalition of the Willing-for-War” and the “Chosen people of Israel” have rationalized an aggressive position that is proclaimed as either “Pre-emptive” or “Responsive” on behalf of our “security”…
Often “Praying for Peace” is a seeking for Divine Intervention, and it can therefore deny the Divine reality that Peace is already a Divine Gift and a Divine given!
We are called to be creative of Peace and our Prayers for Peace are therefore to be realized in our Participation as Peacemakers.
If in our prayers we listen – perhaps we will hear the Divine voice praying to us, in us, calling to us ….. Praying for Peace.

“Let us not pray to be sheltered from dangers but to be fearless when facing them."
- Rabindranath Tagore

Flame-dancing Spirit
Come sweep us off our feet
And Dance us through our days.
Surprise us with your rhythms;
dare us to try new steps,
explore new patterns
and new partnerships.
Release us from old routines
to swing in abandoned joy
and fearful adventure.
And in the intervals,
rest us in your still centre. Amen

and thankful in adversity.
Be fair in judgement,

O, Birther of the Cosmos, focus your light within us -- make it useful
Create your reign of unity now
Your one desire then acts with ours,
As in all light, So in all forms,
Grant us what we need each day in bread and insight:
Loose the cords of mistakes binding us,
As we release the strands we hold of other's guilt.
Don't let surface things delude us,
But free us from what holds us back.
From you is born all ruling will,
The power and the life to do,
The song that beautifies all,
From age to age it renews.
I affirm this with my whole being.

Translated from the Aramaic by Saadi Neil Douglas-Klotz.

Translation of "Our Father" directly from Aramaic into English

O cosmic Birther of all radiance and vibration. Soften the ground of our being and carve out a space within us where your Presence can abide.
Fill us with your creativity so that we may be empowered to bear the fruit of your mission.
Let each of our actions bear fruit in accordance with our desire.
Endow us with the wisdom to produce and share what each being needs to grow and flourish.
Untie the tangled threads of destiny that bind us, as we release others from the entanglement of past mistakes.
Do not let us be seduced by that which would divert us from our true purpose, but illuminate the opportunities of the present moment.
For you are the ground and the fruitful vision, the birth, power and fulfilment, as all is gathered and made whole once again.

O God of unchangeable power and eternal light, look favourably on thy whole Church, that wonderful and sacred mystery; and by the tranquil operation of thy perpetual providence carry out the work of humanity’s salvation; and let the whole world feel and see that things which were cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new, and all things are returning to perfection through him from whom they took their origin, even Jesus Christ our Lord.
from the Gelasian Sacramentary:

*************************************

This is my prayer to thee, my lord -
strike, strike at the root of penury in my heart.
Give me the strength lightly to bear my joys and sorrows.
Give me the strength to make my love fruitful in service.
Give me the strength never to disown the poor or bend my knees before insolent might.
Give me the strength to raise my mind high above daily trifles.
And give me the strength to surrender my strength to thy will with love.

A Prayer

May the Christ who walks on wounded feet
walk with you on the road.
May the Christ who serves with wounded hands
stretch out your hands to serve.
May the Christ who loves with a wounded heart
open your hearts to love.
May you see the face of Christ in everyone you meet,
and may everyone you meet
see the face of Christ in you.

Traditional Celtic prayer
VU #349

The above prayer can be found in Voices United (#349) – more than just a hymn book, this resource includes prayers, psalms, creeds, communion settings, a lectionary, and indices by theme, scriptural references, tunes and meters. A number of copies have been donated to the congregation by parishioners. They can be found on the shelves at the entry to the church. Why not take one and have a browse during the service, follow the words as the choir sings (check out the Index of First Lines if you’re not sure), flip around and find a different way of experiencing the word.

Prayer, the giving of attention and our intention to the divine, is the activity that forms and shapes our orientation. Giving of ourselves is an outcome of such activity, and at times is the entry point for our prayer life. Sharing is our giving in community. The Church, and this church community, is an outcome of our giving and our sharing. Wherever we fall short we can always look to our giving and our sharing.
