A Morning Prayer
In the silence before time began,
in the quiet of the womb,
in the stillness of early morning
is your beauty.
At the heart of all creation,
at the birth of every creature,
at the centre of each moment
is your splendour.
Rekindle in me the sparks of your beauty
that I may be part of the splendour of this moment.
Rekindle in me the sparks of your beauty
that I may be a part of the blazing splendour
that burns from the heart of this moment.

Tenth Sunday after Pentecost 5 August 2007

O God, enlarge within us the sense of fellowship with all living
things, our brothers the animals to whom thou gavest the earth
as their home in common with us.
We remember with shame that in the past we have exercised the high
dominion of man with ruthless cruelty so that the voice of the earth,
which should have gone up to thee in song, has been a groan of travail.
May we realise that they live not for us alone but for themselves and
for thee, and that they love the sweetness of life.
Basil the Great, c. 330-79

Here may the poor find succour and the friendless friendship. Here may the tempted find power, the sorrowing comfort and the bereaved find the truth that death hath no dominion over their beloved. Here let the fearing find a new courage and the doubting have their faith and hope confirmed. Here may the careless be awakened and all that are oppressed be freed. “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you.”

Forgive us for listening to - and believing - voices that call us worthless
and unlovable.

“I have called you by name, you are mine.”

Forgive us when we feel imprisoned by our fears - fear of pain,
of loneliness, of death.

“When you pass through trying times which threaten to engulf you, I will be with you.”

Forgive our negative feelings about ourselves and other people.

“You are precious in my sight, and honoured, and I love you.”

Loving and merciful God, forgive us when we allow our fears and our
worries to stifle your voice of love. Help us to hear your words of love
reverberate in every corner of our being so that we know that we too are
your beloved, on whom your favour rests. Amen

Almighty God,
you anointed Jesus at his baptism
with the Holy Spirit,
and revealed him as your beloved Son;
grant that we who are baptised into his name
may give up our lives to your service,
and be found worthy of our calling;
through Jesus Christ our Lord
who is alive with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God now and for ever.

The following prayer from the pen of Thomas Merton, the Trappist monk, writer, and contemplative, expresses the uncertainty of the year ahead, our life unfolding, our Church and its future; and the journey of the Magi, our journey through eternity to the Star that illuminates the Christmas birth…..
"My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope that I have that desire in all that I am doing."
-- Thomas Merton, Thoughts in Solitude

While angels sing blessings from heaven’s starry sky,
Our hearts we prepare now, for Jesus is nigh.

A candle is burning, a candle of Peace,
A candle to signal that conflict must cease.
For Jesus is coming to show us the way,
A message of peace humbly laid in the hay.

A candle is burning, a candle of Joy,
A candle to welcome brave Mary’s new boy.
Our hearts fill with wonder, and eyes light and glow
Like sun in the garden that makes the plants grow.

A candle is burning, a candle of Love,
A candle to point us to heaven above.
A baby for Christmas, a wonderful birth,

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

Divine gift of Love,
by your heavenly star,
you guided those who were wise
to your beloved Child, the birth of Divine Revelation.
May your blessing come to rest on our home and all of us.
Make our lives wise with your wisdom,
true to your teaching,
and enlivened by your love.
May your Word made flesh
make a home among us. Amen

Third Sunday in Advent 17 December 2006

ADVENT Liturgy
We invite young ones from the community to join in lighting the ADVENT Candle – and together Pray for the HOPE that it represents

A candle is burning, a flame warm and bright,
A candle of Hope in December’s dark night.

A baby for Christmas, a wonderful birth,
For Jesus is bringing God’s love to our earth.

We acknowledge our oneness as we join in the Advent anthem that names the coming of the Divine

O come, o come Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lowly exile here, until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, O Wisdom from on high, who orders all things mightily
To us the path of knowledge show, and teach us in her ways to go.

O come, O Rod of Jesse’s stem, from every foe deliver them
that trust your mighty power to save, and give them victory o’er the grave

O come, O key of David, come, and open wide our heavenly home,
Make safe the way that leads on high, and close the path to misery.

Pray
. with thanksgiving for all that is unfolding in creativity and love - for the abundance of blessings we have to give and to share - honour acts of love - and give thanks for our diversity, our strengths and our weaknesses. Give thanks for all that we share in common with all people and with all faiths - Pray that we may hear when others speak of truth. Give thanks for those who bring light into our lives and for the opportunities we have to bring light into the lives of others. Give thanks for our children and for all who will continue the journey that we are on - and build on the foundations we lay. Pray that we might feed others and nurture within ourselves a spirit of compassion. Pray for all refugees and for hospitality in the hearts of all. Give thanks for the Divine fullness that we glimpse as we share together in worship

Second Sunday in Advent 10 December 2006

O ROOT OF JESSE, that stands for an ensign of the people, before whom all governments keep silence and unto whom the peoples shall make supplication: COME, to deliver us, and tarry not. Amen.

The Promise of Advent
Stir up our hearts, we beseech you, to prepare ourselves to receive your Son. When he comes and knocks, may he find us not sleeping in sin, but awake to righteousness, ceaselessly rejoicing in his love. May our hearts and minds be so purified, that we may be ready to receive his promise of eternal life.

*****************************
Praying for Peace
There is a very real danger in “Praying for Peace” especially in these times when the “Coalition of the Willing-for-War” and the “Chosen people of Israel” have rationalized an aggressive position that is proclaimed as either “Pre-emptive” or “Responsive” on behalf of our “security”…
Often “Praying for Peace” is a seeking for Divine Intervention, and it can therefore deny the Divine reality that Peace is already a Divine Gift and a Divine given!
We are called to be creative of Peace and our Prayers for Peace are therefore to be realized in our Participation as Peacemakers.
If in our prayers we listen – perhaps we will hear the Divine voice praying to us, in us, calling to us ….. Praying for Peace.

“Let us not pray to be sheltered from dangers but to be fearless when facing them."
- Rabindranath Tagore

Come sweep us off our feet
And Dance us through our days.

and fearful adventure.
And in the intervals,
rest us in your still centre. Amen

The Aramaic Prayer of Jesus

O, Birther of the Cosmos, focus your light within us -- make it useful
Create your reign of unity now
Your one desire then acts with ours,
As in all light, So in all forms,
Grant us what we need each day in bread and insight:
Loose the cords of mistakes binding us,
As we release the strands we hold of other's guilt.
Don't let surface things delude us,
But free us from what holds us back.
From you is born all ruling will,
The power and the life to do,
The song that beautifies all,
From age to age it renews.
I affirm this with my whole being.

Translated from the Aramaic by Saadi Neil Douglas-Klotz.

Translation of "Our Father" directly from Aramaic into English

O cosmic Birther of all radiance and vibration. Soften the ground of our being and carve out a space within us where your Presence can abide.
Fill us with your creativity so that we may be empowered to bear the fruit of your mission.
Let each of our actions bear fruit in accordance with our desire.
Endow us with the wisdom to produce and share what each being needs to grow and flourish.
Untie the tangled threads of destiny that bind us, as we release others from the entanglement of past mistakes.
Do not let us be seduced by that which would divert us from our true purpose, but illuminate the opportunities of the present moment.
For you are the ground and the fruitful vision, the birth, power and fulfilment, as all is gathered and made whole once again.

O God of unchangeable power and eternal light, look favourably on thy whole Church, that wonderful and sacred mystery; and by the tranquil operation of thy perpetual providence carry out the work of humanity’s salvation; and let the whole world feel and see that things which were cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new, and all things are returning to perfection through him from whom they took their origin, even Jesus Christ our Lord.
from the Gelasian Sacramentary:

This is my prayer to thee, my lord -
strike, strike at the root of penury in my heart.
Give me the strength lightly to bear my joys and sorrows.
Give me the strength to make my love fruitful in service.
Give me the strength never to disown the poor or bend my knees before insolent might.
Give me the strength to raise my mind high above daily trifles.
And give me the strength to surrender my strength to thy will with love.

A Prayer

May the Christ who walks on wounded feet
walk with you on the road.
May the Christ who serves with wounded hands
stretch out your hands to serve.
May the Christ who loves with a wounded heart
open your hearts to love.
May you see the face of Christ in everyone you meet,
and may everyone you meet
see the face of Christ in you.

Traditional Celtic prayer
VU #349

The above prayer can be found in Voices United (#349) – more than just a hymn book, this resource includes prayers, psalms, creeds, communion settings, a lectionary, and indices by theme, scriptural references, tunes and meters. A number of copies have been donated to the congregation by parishioners. They can be found on the shelves at the entry to the church. Why not take one and have a browse during the service, follow the words as the choir sings (check out the Index of First Lines if you’re not sure), flip around and find a different way of experiencing the word.

Prayer, the giving of attention and our intention to the divine, is the activity that forms and shapes our orientation. Giving of ourselves is an outcome of such activity, and at times is the entry point for our prayer life. Sharing is our giving in community. The Church, and this church community, is an outcome of our giving and our sharing. Wherever we fall short we can always look to our giving and our sharing.
